Blog Details

We are a Visit England Accredited Hotel with rooms situated throughout 4 floors. The hotel has no lift due to the grade 2 listed building status meaning we can't make alterations to install one. We will of course, help with luggage though.

Our food is traditional and cooked using fresh produce of fish, meats, vegetables & dairy sourced from Scilly & Cornwall where possible. Our style is not nouvelle cuisine or a fancy Michelin Star type restaurant.

Our experienced staff offer excellent & attentive service, far beyond the normal expectations for a 2 star rated hotel

Our swimming pool is 8 metres x 4 metres and so neither small, or Olympic size! An unusual extra facility compared to even many other hotels. Its size is governed by available space, and is covered in and heated.

Our rooms are comfortable & furnished to the same standard. All are en suite with either bath, shower or both, and some are compact, hence the special offer lower tariff for these.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Hugh Town, at the quieter side and is ideally positioned for easy access to the harbour for inter island boats to the inhabited islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes & St Martins.

I try to post regular photographs of the islands, and you can see more of the hotel in the photo galleries on the right hand side of the page.

Around the Garrison

Saturday 23rd August 2014

A walk around the Garrison is always good to clear the mind. It's a peaceful walk and the views are beautiful. About 1.5 miles right round and walkable in half an hour for the able bodied at a reasonable pace... Or if you're wanting to take it leisurely, it's best to allow an hour and a half.

Bank Holiday Weekend

Saturday 23rd August 2014

The sun is hot! With hardly a cloud in the sky, Porthcressa Beach is idyllic this afternoon! The sea looks inviting with the sun shimmering on it.

Bryher & Tresco

When the tide is high enough, it's possible to transfer between Bryher & Tresco after lunch at 2.30pm this is great if you're on a short break and want to see as many different islands as possible!
These pictures I took last Sunday 17th August 2014

John Bordeaux Pottery & Studio

I called in to see John Bordeaux for a chat. I've been meaning to pop in for some time to see his new artworks. It was great to see some new styles and colours of pottery. We often have guests say to us that they've been and bought some pottery & paintings to take home. John also offers a postal service for those bigger items that may just push over the luggage weight allowance!

Agapanthus

Scilly has an abundance of agapanthus plants in flower at the moment. Blue & white heads all over the place. They are difficult for people to keep alive on the mainland especially the further north they are. But on Scilly they grow out of the strangest of places, where's there's hardly any room to root even!

Off Island For The Day

Sunday 3rd August 2014

The Isles of Scilly are an ideal location if you wish to visit different places daily and take in boat trips. Nowhere is far within the archipelago and a 15 to 30 minute trip on one of the local boats will take you to any of the off idlands, be it inhabited or unihabited. The waters between most islands offering stunning views en route. Each of the off islands have their own characteristics.

These photos I have taken were on Tresco. A privately leased island owned by the Dorien-Smith family; ancestors of Augustus Smith, who started up the famous Tresco Abbey Gardens offering a wide range of sub-tropical plants from all around the world that you'd just not expect to see in the uk! They flourish here and there's always something in flower whatever time of the year.

Superfast Broadband Arrives on Scilly

Wednesday 23rd July 2014

An historic day on Scilly. The fibre optic cable for superfast broadband is brought ashore on Porthcressa. A feat of engineering at its best. Great to watch.

Tresco

Sunday 13th July 2013

These photos are nearly a week ago now but hopefully the scenes will make up for the delay!
We had a trip over to Tresco and relaxed for the day in the sunshine.

Lightning Display

Thursday 17th July 2014

The lightning and thunder storms reported in today's news from last night across the south of the country started here about 9pm for a while. It was quite mesmerising with the skies lighting up brightly.
I was lucky enough to capture one large bolt across the skies above Porthcressa

Pelistry Beach

Saturday 5th July 2014

The sun is out again and it's been a scorching hot afternoon on Scilly. We headed for a lazy couple of hours on Pelistry Beach. Plenty of sun cream being the essential ingredient today!!

There weren't many clouds in the clear blue skies today. I didn't get my phone out quick enough for this cloud formation and it changed from what I thought it looked like!! Oh well, it's still a relaxing photo.

Scillonian Sundays

The Scillonian III is now sailing on Sundays until Sunday 7th September being the last sailing. Here's a picture of her arriving on Sunday 29th June as she passes the island of Samson

Posts out of Sync

I've had a couple of posts that failed to upload so they're now out of sync slightly. These are Scilly Summer Shots & Landing Craft.

Scilly Summer Shots

This week has been stunning. Scilly summers are hard to beat! Why on earth would I want to be anywhere else? ...answer; I wouldn't!!
We've had guests really made up today after seeing dolphins whilst out on a boat trip with local boatman Mark Bromham on the Golden Spray
Here's a couple of pictures of St Mary's this week:
