We are a Visit England Accredited Hotel with rooms situated throughout 4 floors. The hotel has no lift due to the grade 2 listed building status meaning we can't make alterations to install one. We will of course, help with luggage though.

Our food is traditional and cooked using fresh produce of fish, meats, vegetables & dairy sourced from Scilly & Cornwall where possible. Our style is not nouvelle cuisine or a fancy Michelin Star type restaurant.

Our experienced staff offer excellent & attentive service, far beyond the normal expectations for a 2 star rated hotel

Our swimming pool is 8 metres x 4 metres and so neither small, or Olympic size! An unusual extra facility compared to even many other hotels. Its size is governed by available space, and is covered in and heated.

Our rooms are comfortable & furnished to the same standard. All are en suite with either bath, shower or both, and some are compact, hence the special offer lower tariff for these.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Hugh Town, at the quieter side and is ideally positioned for easy access to the harbour for inter island boats to the inhabited islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes & St Martins.

I try to post regular photographs of the islands, and you can see more of the hotel in the photo galleries on the right hand side of the page.

St Martins in the Sun

Sunday 29th July 2012

St Martins in the sunshine is always stunning with the azure blue seas and white sandy beaches. Scilly summers are unbeatable in my book!

Rescued Garden Tiger Moth

Saturday 28th July 2012

I spotted this moth in the pool area, so I rescued it to back outside so it doesn't try landing on the wet stuff!!

Peninnis - Old Town - Harry's Walls

Friday 28th July 2012

Just had a spare hour this afternoon for a quick stomp, so I headed up to Peninnis and down in to Old Town.
Not content that I'd expelled enough energy by the time I'd walked back round Parting Carn, I headed up to Harry's Walls to take a picture of the cruise ships that were in St Mary's Roads. One of them was the Minerva.

Early Morning at Porthcressa

Thursday 26th July 2012

Just a couple of shots of Porthcressa first thing this morning on my way to work. One is a little overexposed even though I tried to shade the lens.

UPDATED!! Total Raised From My Stride For Life Sponsorship

The Stride for Life event in aid of Cancer Research was a real success, and I now have my final total (Just waiting for a couple of payments before handing over). I was aiming for at least £50, and so I am really pleased to say that people have been very generous sponsoring me. I have now managed to raise a total of £136.30.

Many thanks to everyone who has kindly sponsored me. I'm still chuffed to have been the 1st walker over the finish line :)

I walked the route again this afternoon (somewhat more leisurely I might add!). I wanted to try and clear up the distance confusion issue. I took my handheld GPS that I used to use on my boat, and is accurate to within 4 metres. The total distance for the 5km course is exactly 5.3km. So that's sorted now. My phone must've been misbehaving a lot on Sunday!

Yet Another Scilly Clear Blue Sky & Hot Sun Day

Tuesday 24th July 2012

I re-walked the Stride for Life route this afternoon and took a couple of snaps at the top of the hill by the Golf Club entrance road, and then half way down the hill to Porthloo ...and finally one from the bottom of the hill.

“Very welcoming hotel in an amazing place”

We were with a small group from the north of England, our first visit to the Isles of Scilly but the holiday company we travelled with, and the Bell Rock Hotel, had been highly recommended by friends.

The welcome we received was excellent, and throughout our stay everyone in the hotel was so friendly (as indeed were the Scillonians themselves). As others have commented already, we were impressed with the large number of returning guests, not just returning once or twice, but over and over again. We felt that the hotel staff genuinely wanted to look after us,and enjoyed what they were doing not just "going through the motions and doing a job". Of course, living in such a fantastic location as St Mary's must have a bearing on your attitude to life and work!

Cooked breakfast was freshly prepared to order, it always arrived just at the right time! Dinner was always of a very high standard, none of this "picture food" stuff which leaves you hungry afterwards. Also a good choice of main courses which usually included a traditional (eg roast beef), a fish dish, perhaps a curry, always a vegetarian, and the accompanying vegetables were plentiful and cooked just right. Good range of deserts, but if you ask for the ice-cream, make sure you have plenty of room!

Our bedroom was a decent size, beds comfortable, all the amenities you would expect. A slight problem with the shower was resolved straight away without any fuss. Because of the location of the hotel on the main street (dont let that put you off, it's not the M25!) which is in between the two beaches, very few of the rooms will have sea views, but you are only a 30-second walk from the sea front with views of the harbour and other islands. The lounge and bar area are very comfortable, no intrusive music and a good selection of books to browse. The rooms have DVD players and there was a selection of DVDs to borrow, but quite why you would want to spend time watching a dvd in your room in a location such as this in the summer is a mystery to me! No doubt in the winter it might be a different story.

Although it is on the main street, there is little or no traffic noise - probably because there is little or no traffic in St Mary's anyway. Most visitors seem to get about on electric golf buggy-type contraptions which make far less noise than the sparrows, of which there are thousands. Beware if eating your cream tea outside, as they will eat out of your hand and certainly from your plate.

Without a doubt we will be returning. Where has this place been all our lives??

“A gem in the south”

In June 2012 my wife and I made our third visit in four years to Bell Rock. It is impossible to rate this hotel too highly. All of the staff are very professional but also very friendly and helpful. The food is very good and freshly cooked, with a wide choice. The standard of cleanliness is exceptional and far superior to so many of the big national hotel chains. Bell Rock is a real gem and a credit to Daniel Lawson, the manager, and his team. We are definitely returning in 2013.

Misty Morning Harbour

Tuesday 24th July 2012

A strange mist just lurking on the harbour this morning at 7am so I took this from my house.
No problems for flights though. All dispersed by 8am.

Sunset on Scilly

Monday 23rd July 2012

After work at 9pm it was still glorious out there, so a stroll around the Garrison for the sunset was a great idea.

Stride For Life - Sunday 22nd July 2012

Stride for Life in aid of Cancer Research.

The weather was absolutely scorching out there!

I'm pleased to say my walk was completed 47mins 35secs (Official time).
I was really chuffed to be the 1st walker over the finish line! (I don't do running!!)
My position was 28th out of 71.
It's further than the planned 5km; according to my gps it's 7.9km, but it had a little excitable moment through town (probably the buildings in the way), and has added around 1.5km. So I reckon it's about 6.5km in total.

Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me. Once I've got my final total I will post the result... It's got to be over £100 though which I'm really pleased about as I was aiming for at least £50.

Bants Carn to Carn Morval

Friday 20th July 2012

Friday afternoon, I decided to head to Old Town and take the coastal path. I hadn't anticipated how far I was going to go... And ended up walking right round the main body of St Mary's barring Peninnis & the Garrison!
It was a beautiful day for it anyway!!
There are several photos so I'll break it up into 2 or 3 posts :)
