Blog Details

We are a Visit England Accredited Hotel with rooms situated throughout 4 floors. The hotel has no lift due to the grade 2 listed building status meaning we can't make alterations to install one. We will of course, help with luggage though.

Our food is traditional and cooked using fresh produce of fish, meats, vegetables & dairy sourced from Scilly & Cornwall where possible. Our style is not nouvelle cuisine or a fancy Michelin Star type restaurant.

Our experienced staff offer excellent & attentive service, far beyond the normal expectations for a 2 star rated hotel

Our swimming pool is 8 metres x 4 metres and so neither small, or Olympic size! An unusual extra facility compared to even many other hotels. Its size is governed by available space, and is covered in and heated.

Our rooms are comfortable & furnished to the same standard. All are en suite with either bath, shower or both, and some are compact, hence the special offer lower tariff for these.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Hugh Town, at the quieter side and is ideally positioned for easy access to the harbour for inter island boats to the inhabited islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes & St Martins.

I try to post regular photographs of the islands, and you can see more of the hotel in the photo galleries on the right hand side of the page.

Duck Pond

Sunday 30th December 2012

A walk around the top end of St Mary's on the roads took us past Trenoweth & the very full duck pond. The water running off the land and straight into the pond. I should think there's a waterfall at the end of the stream at Watermill at the moment from the pond's overflow.

Bartholomew's Ledge Breaking Seas

Sunday 30th December 2012

The seas were still breaking on Bartholomew's Ledge today. The wind is still fresh and it made holding my phone still enough to take a photo pretty challenging!

Blustery Garrison

Thursday 27th December 2012

A late lunchtime walk around the Garrison. Blustery with dramatic seas and sky. I had to zoom in on the sea breaking on Bartholomew's Ledge so it's a bit blurred

Sundown Christmas Day on Scilly 2012

The sun has moved on for the day now. Here's the Strand late afternoon as the sun dips over the sea's horizon. After an enjoyable family day it reinforces the importance of family and all getting together. I hope you all have enjoyed your day out there, I know I have. And we spare some time to remember friends, family & guests who are sadly no longer with us. All the best, Daniel.

Christmas Day 2012

The morning was quite warm although breezy. As the afternoon has gone on its got cooler and windier. Still; a lovely day and Christmas celebrations!
Merry Christmas to all!!

Christmas Eve on Scilly 2012

The weather has been kind for people travelling on Christmas Eve after bad weather cancelling flights on Saturday. 175 people being flown by Skybus from Newquay. So hopefully everyone should be where they need to be for Christmas Day tomorrow.

Porthmellon

Tuesday 18th December 2012

I managed to escape from the hotel in the afternoon to visit building supplies down Porthmellon and so took this overcast shot across the beach towards Newford Island

Sunrise Over Peninnis

Tuesday 18th December 2012

The morning's sunrise across Porthcressa and Peninnis was stunning. This photo was taken by Josh Birch who has kindly let me use it for my blog :)

St Agnes & Gugh

Saturday 8th December 2012

Not having had a chance all week to get out photo taking, I have permission from John Peacock of St Agnes Boating (http://www.stagnesboating.co.uk/) to post a photograph he has taken this morning of the bar between St Agnes & Gugh. A lovely picture, and good to see a different view from St Mary's pictures for a change.

Wine Tasting in Falmouth, Cornwall

Thursday 22nd November 2012

Wine tasting is an essential part of planning for the next season! I of course struggled as usual to force myself to go. It's tough, but all for the greater good... Honest!! ;)
There's going to be the few inevitable changes to the wine list as usual. Some new wines to look forward to! Again, the wines I select will offer excellent value & quality.

The weather forecast was pretty horrendous for Thursday 22nd November. So much so that we changed our flight plans to arrive on the mainland on the Wednesday to make sure we got to the tasting on Thursday! Luckily we did, as there was no flying all day on Thursday with the very strong winds and heavy rains.
In Falmouth on the Thursday a tree blew over across the road opposite the Maritime Museum, where the tasting took place. The road was closed and the chainsaws were out in record time to clear the obstruction. It was soon cleared.

Stormy Harbour

Monday 26th November 2012

It's another particularly rough, windy day today on Scilly. So far we've avoided the rain today after an extremely wet few days! Luckily we don't have rivers to burst their banks like many places on the mainland. There has been flooding but nothing on the scales of the mainland. Our thoughts go to these people who are suffering floods & damage to their properties and belongings. We hope our guests have escaped the chaos, and are keeping safe.

Posts are doing strange things I'm afraid. This is my 3rd attempt since it originally failed to upload on the 21st!

Foggy Sort Of Day

Tuesday 23rd October 2012

A foggy walk around the garrison in the afternoon. Although its warm, it's a double edged sword this time of year by bringing the fog!

Old Town & Around The Coast

Saturday 20th October 2012

There are several words that can be used to describe today, and this afternoon in particular: warm, calm, peaceful, beautiful, stunning!

It was just too good to miss, and so I headed off on a long walk around the coast as far as Watermill, before heading back via Telegraph and down past Porthloo.

Porth Hellick

Saturday 20th October 2012

The sounds of Oyster Catchers at Porth Hellick.
The tide was out for miles... Not literally!

Pelistry & Tolls Island

Saturday 20th October 2012

It's been a while since I ventured over to Tolls Island, and as it was a beautiful afternoon an the tide was out, I thought if take the opportunity to head across the sand and out to the end. The sea was gently slapping against the rocks and seaweed out there.

Watermill

Saturday 20th October 2012

Lovely & peaceful this afternoon up Watermill. The stream was flowing quite fast though. That's all I could hear walking up the lane.
