We are a Visit England Accredited Hotel with rooms situated throughout 4 floors. The hotel has no lift due to the grade 2 listed building status meaning we can't make alterations to install one. We will of course, help with luggage though.

Our food is traditional and cooked using fresh produce of fish, meats, vegetables & dairy sourced from Scilly & Cornwall where possible. Our style is not nouvelle cuisine or a fancy Michelin Star type restaurant.

Our experienced staff offer excellent & attentive service, far beyond the normal expectations for a 2 star rated hotel

Our swimming pool is 8 metres x 4 metres and so neither small, or Olympic size! An unusual extra facility compared to even many other hotels. Its size is governed by available space, and is covered in and heated.

Our rooms are comfortable & furnished to the same standard. All are en suite with either bath, shower or both, and some are compact, hence the special offer lower tariff for these.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Hugh Town, at the quieter side and is ideally positioned for easy access to the harbour for inter island boats to the inhabited islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes & St Martins.

I try to post regular photographs of the islands, and you can see more of the hotel in the photo galleries on the right hand side of the page.

My wife and I enjoyed a really wonderful stay at the Bell Rock. The service was first-class and the food superb.

The staff were all excellent, especially the manager Daniel, who managed to combine charm with a friendly efficiency.

Well done to all.

A Visit From Sweden

We had a couple pop into the hotel this week from Sweden who are staying on St Mary's. They wanted to visit the Bell Rock Hotel after reading about us in a newspaper back home in Sweden, but we were unable to accommodate them as we were already booked up.
I was puzzled at the fact that they said they knew of me from a newspaper in Sweden and knew that I had spent some time over there in the small town of Vara. I had originally gone to Sweden on a college student exchange probably 14 years ago! I also thought it bizarre that they linked me to the Bell Rock Hotel as back then I was not associated with the hotel. I had been pictured as a group for the local newspaper as part of the college exchange, but this didn't add up.
...Then something twigged!! In my first year as manager at the Bell Rock Hotel 2007, we had a couple of Travel Writers stay for a few nights and they interviewed me to go along with their article on the islands. I had forgotten all about this.
...So if you can read Swedish please follow the link (and if you can't, good old Google can "sort of" translate the page for you!)
(Having snags with the direct link... hopefully will follow shortly, but in the mean time, copy and paste this if you wish! Sorry)

Two stars belies this Hotel's quality!”

We were welcomed by very accommodating staff to a very clean, well running and well established hotel. Even though we arrived far too early to check in, our room was already made ready! Nothing was too much trouble for the members of staff.
Others on St Mary staying at other hotels were concerned by noise from the overnight deliveries arriving at the dock in Hughtown, yet we were no-where near the noise albeit we were a short (2 minute) walk to the town centre.
Not being regular hotel goers we found it hard to understand why this is classed as a 2 star hotel - it is far more than that and the menus offered a similar range yet better value to those of the Star Castle (4* establishment) when we compared them.
An amusing thing to observe is the ability of the waiters to recall how you have your breakfast in the morning - they would arrive at the table and recount the previous day's order! The staff are entertaining and work very well together as a team.
This hotel was an excellent base allowing us to explore six islands in four days.
It also arranged the flights from Newquay for us, and explained that there is a fast transfer service (£6.50pp return) from the airport to the hotel (sit at the front on the minibus and listen to the driver explain the place to get your bearings).
Have already reccommended this hotel to others who are already booked up.

“An excellent place to stay on the Scilly's”
Bell Rock Hotel

We were pleasantly surprised by the high quality of service, cleanliness and friendliness of this hotel. It is higher than 2 star quality and is highly recommended for a stay on these beautiful islands. We had never visited the Scilly's before and were leaping into the unknown when we made our booking. However, the island of St Mary's was a perfect holiday destination for stunning walks along the coast, a great variety of wildlife and most importantly relaxation and calmness. The Bell Rock Hotel added to this wonderful mid year break.

“What more could you ask for in a hotel?”
Bell Rock Hotel

30 May 2010

I enjoyed my stay at The Bell Rock Hotel, the staff were attentive and very helpful paying just the right amount of attention at meal times.
I found the food to be of a high quality with tasty options every day, breakfast was particularly good, a great start to the day.
The rooms are decorated to a high standard and were comfortable in every way.
I can't understand the comment below regarding the manager, as I found him to be quite the opposite, and was very helpful during our stay.
I felt he was happy to help us at all times and endeavoured to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
All in all I would definitely recommend the Bell Rock to anyone wishing a relaxing and carefree stay on Scilly.

Note From Daniel:
...Well, what can I say?! I'm not sure where this review is coming from, but being fair, I will still post it on my blog!! I guess I can't please everybody all of the time. I do however find it rather annoying when people do not see me if there is a problem whilst they are here, and then go home to complain about it from a safe distance, as contradictory to the review, nothing was said to me. I have since contacted the guest and resolved any issues. I do feel I have been sold short on this one. Take it on the chin Daniel ...and keep smiling (as always!!) ;)

All of the staff were excellent, with the exception of the manager who seems unable to smile and also ignored a complaint from one of our party.
Our rooms were very ordinary.
The food was of a good standard.
A very good location .
Overall not paticularly good value.
