We are a Visit England Accredited Hotel with rooms situated throughout 4 floors. The hotel has no lift due to the grade 2 listed building status meaning we can't make alterations to install one. We will of course, help with luggage though.

Our food is traditional and cooked using fresh produce of fish, meats, vegetables & dairy sourced from Scilly & Cornwall where possible. Our style is not nouvelle cuisine or a fancy Michelin Star type restaurant.

Our experienced staff offer excellent & attentive service, far beyond the normal expectations for a 2 star rated hotel

Our swimming pool is 8 metres x 4 metres and so neither small, or Olympic size! An unusual extra facility compared to even many other hotels. Its size is governed by available space, and is covered in and heated.

Our rooms are comfortable & furnished to the same standard. All are en suite with either bath, shower or both, and some are compact, hence the special offer lower tariff for these.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Hugh Town, at the quieter side and is ideally positioned for easy access to the harbour for inter island boats to the inhabited islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes & St Martins.

I try to post regular photographs of the islands, and you can see more of the hotel in the photo galleries on the right hand side of the page.

St Mary's Harbour

Friday 19th October 2012

A glorious calm day today. The sun gleaming off the sea and the boats still left in the harbour.

Garrison

Thursday 19th October 2012

After a stormy Wednesday with high winds, low pressure and high spring tides causing flooding into Hugh Street, Thursday by contrast was a lovely sunny day. Still a stiff breeze, but certainly warm enough for a walk in lightweight fleece.

Woolpack point into the bright afternoon sun.

Garrison

Sunday 14th October 2012

A sunny but cool day. After the last couple of days off I've had, it was a vast improvement.
I took a walk around the garrison with the family after lunch.

Peninnis

Friday 12th October 2012

It was a pleasant afternoon if not for a cool wind and a dramatic moody sky. I put on a thin fleece and took a stomp up around Peninnis. Luckily for me I got home just in time as the skies turned and we had a half hour torrential downpour with thunder & lightning! That soon passed through though. I can't remember when we last had thunder & lightning? It must be quite a few months ago though.

“Faultless”

Reviewed 9 October 2012

Clean, welcoming and comfortable. Well, I expect that but here the staff seem genuinely pleased to meet you and help you to enjoy your stay. The food is just superb. In fact, I wanted to kidnap the chef and bring him home with me. Service in the dining room was attentive without being intrusive and that is very difficult to...

Thank you for your kind words about our staff and service you received from them. I'm glad that your trip was a pleasant one, and we hope to welcome you back again soon. I'm glad you didn't kidnap our chef, as his skills are needed here ;) All the best, Daniel

“Surprisingly good 2 star which should be higher rated - top notch”

Reviewed 4 October 2012

This small family-run hotel is on the main island of St Mary's. It is old-fashioned in many ways but that's what makes it pretty unique. The rooms are well-appointed, homely and spotlessly clean, if a tad small. There is a small swimming-pool (covered) which is pretty basic. The lounge area and bar, where one waits to be taken downstairs to the dining room, is cosy. The food at all meals is well cooked, all home-made and well presented, the waiting staff always attentive and pay attention in doing this "properly". The staff are all conscientious and multi-task, and proud of what they do. The prices are very reasonable. It is worth more than two stars, the food and service being exemplary. It exemplifies Scilly really - a part of the UK that is still in the 1950s, where standards matter and is not ostentatious. Scilly has lovely beaches, seascapes and gardens and is a part of England that is a million miles away from the frenetic world most of us live in - a real tonic, and escape into the past.. The Bell Rock is worth seeking out if you like things quiet and low-key with nice, tasty food.

I'm pleased you were happy with our service, and that our star rating exceeded expectations. This is our aim, to provide a high standard of service, whilst balancing in with the friendly, attentive qualities.
You mention the pool area, and I'm pleased to report that this area will be looked at in the winter period for refurbishment plans this year.
